1 Mortimer Court has an open-plan living room downstairs, with a sitting-area, a very well-equipped kitchen and a place to sit and eat. Upstairs, there is a lovely comfortable bedroom with a view over the greenery of the garden; next door is a bathroom with a loo, wash hand basin and a bath with a proper shower over it. The front door opens out onto a little outside area with a bench for sitting in the morning sun. Round the corner is what can only be described as a secret garden, with its private sitting area and lush planting. This cosy cottage has everything you need for a little get-away; and the owner, who is a cook and proprietor of a local country house bed & breakfast establishment, provides a lovely seasonal foodie welcome pack.

Ludlow has often been described as the perfect historic town, with its beautiful listed town houses, shops, and medieval streets. At its heart are the Norman castle, one-time home of the Tudors, and the lively market square. Ludlow is the country’s first ‘Cittaslow’ or Slow City, and headquarters of the Slow Food Movement in the UK. This and the many festivals, excellent restaurants and independent food shops (such as the well-known Mousetrap cheese shop in Church Street) reflect the importance of good food culture in Ludlow and the surrounding area. It is pure luxury to walk such a short distance to excellent food shops, top-notch boutiques, markets, intriguing antique shops and no less than two Michelin-starred restaurants. Parking is no problem with use of the owner’s permit, and the railway station is a mere seven minutes’ walk from the town-centre.

The countryside roundabout is lovely – The Shropshire Hills are designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. There is a wonderful variety of walking and cycling pathways and routes, as well as quantities of historical evidence of the centuries of borderland struggle – from earthworks and hill forts to Norman castles. The area is rich in wildlife and flora: kingfishers and otters live in the rivers (recognised as ‘high-quality’ watercourses), upland birds such as grouse, curlew, and merlin live in the hills, and there are always buzzards mewling and circling overhead.
