Pretty, light-filled Court Lodge is a comfortable holiday cottage in the most beautiful rural position while being only 20 minutes from the M4 Severn Bridge. A good mile and a half away from the public road, it has unspoilt views into the Vale of Usk and across to the mountains. Court Lodge sits in front of ancient oak woodland on a peaceful farming estate, and its large enclosed garden has secure fencing and plenty of space for children or dogs to run around and play. Deer are plentiful in the woods, and sheep and rare-breed cows graze in the fields round about. The complete peace and quiet is only broken by the distant, timeless sound of church bells from a neighbouring hamlet, the odd woodpecker, or an occasional tractor passing by to the farm. Downstairs, there is a good-sized bright sitting-room with two sofas and an open log fire at one end. At the other, there is a dining-area, with a neat little kitchen and utility room next door. There is a wet room shower with loo; and a large, sunny twin room has plenty of floor space for children to play. Upstairs, two cosy south-facing double bedrooms have wooden floor boards, Welsh blankets, lovely bedlinen, rugs, hot water bottles, and a great view. One has a king-size bed, the other a double. There is also a bathroom with loo, wash hand basin, and bath with a shower. The enclosed garden is fantastic for children and dogs, or simply for sitting in and enjoying the peace and quiet of this magical place.

Court Lodge is a former estate lodge for the lovely Regency/Georgian house. It is well away from the road, down a mile-and-a-half-long drive, so anxious parents or dog-owners can relax. Great walking can be had on footpaths around the estate, and children will love all the animals – lambs in spring time, pigs in their pigsty, and some very friendly working spaniels and sheep dogs. The lovely county town of Monmouth, with plenty of useful and attractive shops ( cafes, gift shops, a great kitchen shop, a health food shop, a couple of good butchers, a superb green-grocer, M&S Food and a Waitrose), is a short drive away. There are plenty of good restaurants and pubs in the area, including the Michelin-starred Crown at Whitebrook, the famous Walnut Tree Inn near Abergavenny, or the excellent Misbah Tandoori in the centre of Monmouth.

Things to do around Court Lodge Holiday Cottage Wales

Outdoor pursuits are spectacular in this area: cycling on dedicated routes in the Forest of Dean; canoeing, kayaking or wild swimming on the river Wye; hill-walking, pony-trekking or mountain-biking in the Black Mountains. The Great Outdoors is at its best in this part of the world, with richly diverse populations of fauna and flora – wild orchids, red kites, wild ponies, important meadowlands, and much more. Hundreds of years of border warfare have left a legacy of fascinating Norman castles, guarding the vulnerable points between England and Wales. Castles proliferate in this area, but particularly worth a visit is White Castle towards Abergavenny, a well preserved garrison with a proper water-filled moat. Raglan Castle is also a great place to visit.
