Fifteenth-century Farm Cottage was once the original farm house. It has recently been carefully restored, respecting the old building’s origins, while at the same time creating a wonderfully light and spacious holiday cottage.

Downstairs, the front of the cottage comprises the old rooms – a cosy sitting-room with a wood burner, and a dining-room; and at the back, an extension incorporates an old pigsty, producing a really successful fusion of old and new. This extension is now an airy double-height kitchen, with downstairs loo and utility room, and big, fully-opening glazed doors leading out onto a sunny patio. The whole of the ground-floor has underfloor heating, so you are greeted - the luxury! - by warm flag-stones as you come downstairs on a cold winter’s morning.

Upstairs, a spacious landing leads into a master bedroom with an ensuite shower room (with loo and wash hand basin), a second double bedroom (an extra mattress can be supplied for flexibility) and a family bathroom (with shower over the bath, loo and hand basin). Outside, a sunny terrace, with a flower bed, and herbs to pick, has the most beautiful unspoilt view. The big glazed doors open completely so that meals can easily be brought out from the kitchen to enjoy al fresco, and children can run safely around the field in front, with plenty of room for ball games, and in full view of the parental gaze.

The nitty gritty:

Things to do around this farm holiday cottage

The owners are delighted for visitors to roam around the farm and explore. They will put a red ribbon on a gate if there is a lively bull in it, or if cows are about to calve, so that you know which fields to avoid on your walks. They will also show you around the farm, if you’d like a little tour. The farm is in the Higher Stewardship scheme to protect its ancient hedges, woods and wild flower meadows. It has also been awarded Farm Assured status, and has been featured on local and national radio for the work it does with local schools. Managed in a sympathetic way, the farm is a haven for wildlife. Red kites and buzzards hunt the meadows during the day, whilst owls patrol the hedges at night. Farm Cottage is one of the buildings on this picture-book farm steading, so there will be some farmyard sounds, including the clucking of chickens, the moo of a cow, the baa of some sheep, and the rumble of a tractor in a field. But this is heaven foir children - especially for those who live in an urban area.

The tantalising view of the Black Mountains a mile to the west invites you to explore their mysterious allure, as well as take part in all the sturdy outdoorsy things on offer - walking, mountain-biking and pony-trekking. As a contrast, there are Norman castles, market towns, and interesting old churches to investigate. Welcoming local pubs and excellent restaurants are in good supply to refresh you after all these activities.

Face the other direction towards England at the more bucolic attractions of the countryside around the River Wye, and have a go at canoeing, wild swimming, fishing, or simply enjoying some scenic riverside walks. Hay-on-Wye, the famous book town, is 12 miles away, and is also a great place to visit for antiques, art galleries, little boutiques, bistros, pubs and excellent ice-cream. Visit the city of Hereford at 11 miles away for the famous Mappa Mundi and the Chained Library, both next to the cathedral. There is also a superb café in All Saints Church in the centre of the city, and a handy Pizza Express near the cathedral for flagging children. Abergavenny, with its markets, covered market hall, and now famous September food festival is 10 miles away. For closer shopping, good supplies can be had at the village shop 3 miles away in Longtown, and you can pick up superb fish and chips in Ewyas Harold on your way home (3 ½ miles). The Crown at Longtown, which serves good pub food, is 3 miles away and can be walked to across fields. The owners also recommend The Cornewall Arms in Clodock as a good watering-hole. Both Tesco and Ocado deliver, so you can even choose not to set foot outside Upper House Farm.
