The Ludlow Holiday Cottage View Location Map

Ludlow was once described by John Betjeman as ‘the loveliest town in England’. And, tucked away in a very quiet, attractive street, just a gentle 10-minute walk from the historic centre, The Ludlow Holiday Cottage is really well located for enjoying all that this handsome, vibrant town has to offer – interesting independent shops, delicatessens, markets and restaurants – as well for excursions into the lyrically beautiful Shropshire countryside. This is a superbly designed gem of a building, where the owners have cleverly created a sense of spaciousness with a double-height living-area, vaulted ceiling and gallery bedroom reached by an elegant spiral staircase. Downstairs, the lovely, well-equipped tailor-made kitchen (with a cool black slate work surface, a gleaming batterie de cuisine, and the most delightful handmade drawers built into the wall) leads into the double-height living area. With a comfortable armchair, corner sofa-cum-chaise, this fantastic space focuses on the wood burner in winter; or, with the big French doors flung open, onto the sunny terrace in summer. The luxurious bathroom, complete with its own personalised handmade soap, is next door. Top spec insulation, a wood burner and solar panels for heating both water and radiators make this a very green building, without compromising on comfort and warmth.

The funky metal spiral staircase leads you upstairs to a lovely airy gallery bedroom with a king-size bed (this can be separated into singles if liked). Everything is neat, ship-shape and a joy to use. The outside space comprises a generous flagged and hedged terrace with garden furniture, and a path down the side of the cottage to its private gate.

Enjoying Ludlow and the countryside around it

From the river Teme at the bottom of the hill to the castle at the top, Ludlow is an architectural gem, with hundreds of beautiful listed buildings (including the famous Feathers Hotel) amongst the medieval and Georgian streets. It is a pleasure just to walk around and enjoy their beauty; but it also a thriving market town with a strong community feel, so Ludlow never feels in the least bit like a museum. There are wonderful markets, superb delicatessens, cheese shops, butchers, specialist brewers, antique and gift shops, lovely boutiques, pubs, cafes and restaurants (including the Michelin-starred La Becasse in Corve Street). And if you can tear yourself away from the town, you can enjoy really beautiful, unspoilt, peaceful countryside. Shropshire is one of England's most rural counties, and in the Shrophire Hills or Mortimer Forest or simply walking along the banks of the river Teme, the visitor can really feel away from it all - almost transported to an earlier, more pastoral, century. There is plenty to visit, too, from lovely Berrington Hall ('the perfect house in the perfect setting' with landscaping by Capability Brown) to the superb Ironbridge Gorge Museums just south of Telford. There are plenty of dedicated walks, too, such as The Mortimer Trail, The Shropshire Way and along the famous Offa's Dyke. Or hill walks from Church Stretton take you up to the Long Mynd, a vast sprawling hill with superb views from the summit, and up to Caer Caradoc to the east, where there is an iron-age hill fort at the top.
