The former farm building has a wealth of ancient oak beams, maintaining a sense of provenance. The walls are limed in the traditional manner, and solid oak floorboards are laid over the original joists. The combination of old and new gives an atmosphere of timeless peace and tranquillity.
The surrounding countryside provides stunning walks, lovely country towns (Grosmont, Hereford, Abergavenny, Ross-on-Wye, Hay-on-Wye), a good range of fabulous restaurants and pubs, and plenty of interesting things to see and do. A delightfully rustic private garden for the sole use of the cottage lies close by, with its own barbecue, little stone table, chairs and a sun-lounger. One of our two favourite pubs, The Hunter's Moon, is within a half an hour's walk across the fields. Or Stable Cottage can be a place to escape to and kick off shoes, read, listen to music, relax in front of a DVD or revive aching muscles in the roll-top bath. The seventeenth-century listed farm steading is in the middle of Blaentrothy Meadows, a 100-acre Site of Special Scientific Interest, which can be explored by public footpaths.
The fields are ancient, un-ploughed and unimproved, so have a wealth of important grasses and wild flowers. In May, the fields which are chosen to be left aside for hay are thick with wild orchids (see picture below taken June 2008), violets, Lady’s Smock and many other meadow flowers. In other fields, the ecosystem is supported by the grazing of farm animals, either sheep or cows, who distribute the wild flower and grass seeds in their dung and prevent intrusive plants and trees from growing.

Things to do around Blaentrothy Welsh Holiday Cottage
Once batteries have been recharged, there are plenty of excellent walks around the Blaentrothy Meadows on public footpaths as well as further afield: you can walk across the fields in under half an hour to the local pub, the Hunters Moon at Llangattock Lingoed. There are plenty of things to see and do in the area – castles, churches, country towns, markets, excellent restaurants (this area has been dubbed the Dordogne of Britain for good reason), outdoor pursuits (such as golf, riding, cycling, paragliding, climbing, pot-holing and huntin’/shootin’/fishin’), and wildlife reserves are plentiful.
