Tucked into the corner of a meadow high up in the foothills of the Black Mountains, Field Maple Yurt is cleverly positioned to enjoy a beautiful view of Hay Bluff and the last rays of the sun as it sets behind this northernmost tip of the mountain range. The yurt is specifically designed to be well-insulated and cosy, while also letting in plenty of light. On warm evenings, you can throw open the big windows and drift off to a lullaby of country sounds; and on colder evenings, it is fun to snuggle up in the yurt, with the wood burner doing its job and heating the space a treat. Sleeps a couple, plus a babe-in-arms.
Sturdily made of British hardwood and covered with tough canvas, the yurt is furnished with top quality items – a big comfy bed with a pocket-sprung mattress, a very effective wood burner, a sofa, table and chairs, and a bookshelf-cum-storage unit. Lovely colour combinations of turquoise and deep pink create zingy, exotic contrasts to the more subdued green-and-cream colour of the yurt itself.
Raised up from the meadow on a generous circle of decking, there is everything you will need for cooking in the camp kitchen next to the yurt, plus a table to eat round. Well-equipped, very clean and organised, this makes cooking preparation a joy. There is a barbecue-cum-firepit, which is fun to use and warming to sit round if you don’t want to drag yourself away from your view of the stars.
The delightfully quirky boat-shaped compost loo is conveniently just behind, which is completely fine to use – but there are some very nice flush loos in the Wash House to Beat All Wash Houses, an easy 120m walk away. This wash house has a luxurious private bathroom for your own use, with roll-top bath, separate shower (plus separate flushing loo for your own use, too) as well as a scullery area and fridge for shared use with the Shade Oak Yurt (positioned a good distance away at the other end of the field).
THINGS TO DO AROUND Field Maple Yurt
Glebe Farm is a great place to explore, with lots of pretty walks to wooded streams and through fields full of delightful, curious animals – horses, sheep and cows. Anna, one of the owners, will be more than happy to introduce you to the horses on the farm; and the spectacular views of the Haterall Ridge may well tempt you to dust off your walking boots and climb up into the Black Mountains. A trip to Hay-on-Wye is a must for book lovers (the second-hand bookshops are world-famous) and for those who enjoy quirky independent shops, boutiques and galleries. Pick up some good reads for relaxing in and around the comfy, spacious yurt, enjoying the peace and quiet of its beautiful surroundings. You could finish a happy day by walking across the farmland to the wonderful local pub down in the valley by the Escley Brook. Good food, beers and wine, plus a friendly atmosphere will send you back up the hill with a warm feeling inside.
