THINGS TO DO AROUND GATTIMER LODGE IN THE GOLDEN VALLEY

Gattimer Lodge is perfectly located for access to both the River Wye and the Black Mountains, being close enough to both to enjoy hill-walking, river-walking, wild-swimming and canoeing. Hay-on-Wye is a great draw for visitors, with a very lively cultural scene, wonderful second-hand bookshops (for which Hay is famous), and the now internationally-recognised Hay Literary Festival. Shopping is great for unusual shops, vintage and antique, boutiques, food shops and markets, and galleries. Tired legs can be soothed and appetites sated in the town’s plethora of cafes and pubs - in particular Shepherds Ice-cream Parlour, which sells not only the most delicious ice-cream, but also excellent coffee and other good things. In the summer, it is good fun to take a picnic to the river beach, the other side of the river from the town, or to hire canoes and take your picnic with you.

Other border towns are very accessible, too, as well as the beautiful black and white villages of Herefordshire. Weobley, for example is one of the prettiest, with its handsome wood-framed buildings, and well worth a trip. There are cafes, pubs, shops and restaurants there, too. Hereford is within striking-distance for its cathedral, housing the famous Mappa Mundi and Chained Library.

'This is by far one of the nicest cottages we've stayed in. The attention to detail is second to none, and it is clear that so much thought has gone into making what is such a special place. Thank you so much for the extra touches - the lemon cake, biscuits, and lovely hamper. Harry very much enjoyed the lemon cake, and was suddenly feeling much better! Sophie also enjoyed exploring around the lodge and slept well in the cot. We actually got three nights of her sleeping through the night - a first for a long time. All in all we had a lovely time and will certainly be back. Thank you.' Ruth, Huw, Harry and Sophie from Cheshire

EXTRA-ORDINARY!!' Ian and Christine, north Devon

'A fantastic home from home for our catch-up with family over New Year. Perfect for father's limited mobility with plenty of ground-floor accommodation and a walk-in shower etc. The kitchen was a pleasure to cook in. The whole lodge has been carefully planned and brilliantly executed. The welcome goodies were an excellent touch - thank you. The Christmas tree and decorations were also a lovely touch. A pity the weather wasn't drier so as to be able to explore the local area, but I guess that means we'll have to return at some point.....! Thank you for looking after us all so well. I'm sure Gattimer Lodge will become a very popular place to stay in 2016 - and beyond!' Dave and Lesley, Poole.
