The Hayshed has been cleverly transformed from an old tumbledown hay shed into an utterly beautiful holiday barn. Every detail has been well-considered and meticulously executed – from the planning of the bright open space, to the ingenious home-made touches like the wall lamps and the bedroom chair made from an old tractor-seat. Eco-friendliness is the byword here, with a carbon neutral status derived from the owners’ use of solar panels, ground-source heat-pump, locally-sourced materials and ‘up-cycling’. But above all, the stunning, ever-changing view across the Monmouthshire hills is one to lighten the heart and lift the spirits. Sleeps 2 to 4 (plus an infant and a well-behaved dog).
This lovely barn has a 15% discount for a couple outside the school holidays based on the use of one bed only (the price automatically adjusts when you book for 2 adults)
The kitchen/living-room, with its high ceiling and big glass doors, has a great sense of light and space, but is cosy and warm with full-length curtains, underfloor heating, and high insulation for the winter. Soft calming tones of blue are balanced by honeyed neutrals and lots of warm wood. The big glass doors open out onto decking, a gravel courtyard, and grass, allowing a sense of inside-outside living.
The main bedroom is downstairs, as is the superb wet-room with shower and loo, heated towel-rail and toiletries. Upstairs, on the mezzanine, a lovely twin bedroom nestles into the eaves.
Outside, a modernist table and stools, shaded by a large parasol, add a note of contemporary chic; deeply-riven ancient timber beams rescued from the old building form an unusual screen to one side. This private terrace has stunning views across the valley to the Trellech hills, Blorenge and Skirrid mountains. The sound of birdsong floating up from the large copse just down the hill is magical, and owls hoot on clear still nights.
Things to do around The Hayshed
The Hayshed is off the beaten track, yet the picturesque county town of Monmouth, with its handsome Georgian town houses, is a handy 10-minute drive away. It has good food shopping, a local farmers' market, and cafes aplenty. The nearby market town of Abergavenny ('The Gateway to Wales'), is a celebrity in the foodie world, with its now-famous yearly September Food Festival and many good restaurants in its environs - The Walnut Tree Inn, The Bell at Skenfrith, The Inn at Penallt, or the Crown at Pantygelli to name but a few. The famous town of Hay-on-Wye is a must for book lovers, as it is considered THE centre in Europe for second-hand books. Every May/June, the town hosts the compelling Hay Literary Festival, attracting big names in the literary world. The smaller Winter Weekend festival every November/December, takes place in the quirky shops in the town centre. On the way, you can choose to drive either through the scenic Golden Valley or the up the more dramatic Llanthony Valley, exploring the beautiful border country with its castles and cathedrals, churches and abbeys.
With the Black Mountains in one direction and the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean in another, there’s a superb variety of things to see and do – vigorous walks up big hills with big views, canoeing down the Wye through dramatic gorges where the river has carved out the limestone rock, trekking along the Offa’s Dyke path, or some gentle picturesque riverside strolls. Pedalabikeaway in the Forest of Dean offers safe off-road cycling for families; and GoApe, a network of high wires and zip wires through the tree-tops, is a must for excitement junkies. The area also offers a wealth of music festivals, from Brecon Jazz to The Green Man Festival at Glanusk.

'It’s every bit as good as it looks on the website! We’ve had a wonderful few days, five action-packed days out and about and the evenings relaxing, admiring the view and taking in the peace and tranquility. The accommodation is very well equipped, very comfortable, and has everything you need. Lizzie and Stephen were very welcoming and although we didn’t need any help during our stay, I am sure they would have been more than happy to help!' Dominic, Jo, Ben and Max, from Reading
'The Hayshed is a perfect getaway for a birthday break. Great views and a sense of space. Gussy, our cocker spaniel enjoyed keeping a watchful eye on the comings and goings of the bullocks - just in case, you understand! The Hayshed is a delightful place, everything you could want cleverly slotted into a small space. When we came we had both come from lots of travelling and in need of a good night’s sleep and this bed has to be one of the comfiest! Everything is beautifully finished, with lots of lovely touches. Visited Hay-on-Wye and walked from Monmouth to Symonds Yat, which was lovely. Thanks v. much Lizzie & Stephen!' Nicky, Tracey and Gussy, London
'A wonderful place, in a wonderful place. We loved everything about it. The kids particularly enjoyed canoeing, cycling in the Forest of Dean, Go Ape, and Puzzlewood. The grown-ups particularly liked the lovely restaurants, stunning views and interesting wildlife, right on the doorstep. Thanks for everything.' The Green family (Ipswich)
'Thank you for your warm welcome. Our weekend at the Hayshed was spent celebrating Sunny’s birthday and Mothers’ Day. The cottage is beautiful, and a lot of thought has gone into the modern decor. Our two-year-old son Arjun loved running around in the fields, watching the sheep and making a tent. Our visit was very relaxing and a lot of time was spent looking at the views. We enjoyed Mothers’ Day in the Forest of Dean and loved going on the steam engine. We would highly recommend family and friends to visit the Hayshed. Thank you, Stephen and Lizzie.' Sunny, Nick and Arjun - Birmingham

Dad really enjoyed all the nearby walks. I really loved it here.' Gracie aged 9 (The Danes, from Maidenhead)

By email to the office:
I just wanted to write and say what a wonderful time we had at The Hayshed last week. The place was spotlessly clean and beautifully looked after.
The owners were kind and unobtrusive and we reluctantly returned home on Friday.
Thank you for your fantastic service and we will definitely be using you again.
'Gorgeous cottage! Our two girls particularly loved their attic bedroom, the staircase with the twinkly lights, and the cows! We have had a wonderfully relaxing time. Thank you.
In terms of places to visit we returned to sample (and stock up on) the Ancre Hill vineyard wines. We’d wholeheartedly recommend a visit, a tour and sitting out with a cheese board on a sunny day. We also enjoyed a superb Sunday lunch at Prego in Monmouth.’
The Powell family, Berkhamsted
‘Amazing!! What a fabulous place this is - both the cottage and the surroundings. We were made to feel so welcome, the gift was a lovely touch. Stephen and Lizzie, you have created a wonderfully peaceful, calm and comfortable haven from the world at the Hayshed. Thank you.
I had an amazing time here! Thank you very much’ - Noah aged 10

‘Whilst we only live 40 minutes away from the Hayshed, it could be a thousand miles, in terms of the tranquility, the views, the sounds and smells. We have been privileged to stumble upon this spot, and can’t quite get over how beautiful it is here. The cottage itself is immaculate. There is nothing I could ask for that hasn’t been thought of. We have had some lovely walks, and our black lab/collie has been in heaven! It was particularly lovely to walk to the Hendre and back across the fields, through Llangattock church, where we met the gentleman from the Manor House cutting the grass in the grave yard, who gave us a potted history of the Rolls family, and showed us the monument to Charles Rolls himself. We also had a lovely afternoon in Monmouth, and an excellent meal in the very dog-friendly Clytha Arms near Raglan. This has been a perfect retreat, and the longest long weekend I can recall! I have made a promise to myself to come back in the autumn, (if I can wait that long) - it will be lovely to see the trees on the turn. Oh well, back to reality now - 40 minutes up the road! Thank you for creating this place!’ John and Sarah, Hereford
‘What a fantastic venue for our first holiday as a family of three! Beautiful location - so peaceful with amazing views and wildlife to watch. We loved exploring the woodland (especially Jonah who was fascinated by the trees) it would be great to see how they grow over time. The Hayshed itself is gorgeous. Very spacious considering its size with everything you need. We love the patio - much more interesting to look outside than at the TV! Lizzie and Stephen have been fantastic hosts and made us feel extremely welcome - nothing was too much trouble, and we were so grateful for how kind they have been to us - it felt like visiting friends! Your passion for the Hayshed is very apparent and you should be very proud!’ Mat, Lucy and Jonah (aged 6 months), Manchester
‘This has been an outstanding weekend! The Hayshed is perfect - very well done, and it is clear that it will continue providing an excellent get away for many years to come! Our girls want this to always be our holiday house now! We’ll definitely be back! Well done - a fantastic place!’ Sasha, Vitaly, Alina, Alesya, Annika from Cambridge
‘WOW! What a fantastic place - you’ve done an amazing job of renovating the Hayshed! You’ve given us a lot of inspiration and ideas for out future farmhouse. Such a peaceful location - fantastic to hear all the birds while having breakfast outside in the morning. This week was just what we needed, we’ll be heading back home completely relaxed. Thank you very much and see you again.’ Rhys and Heledd, Corwen
