Holiday cottage - prize-wining restoration Old world charm, holiday let with character

Hen Ystablau was converted between 2002 and 2009 from a disused corn mill into what it is now – a beautiful holiday house with lots of character. Not surprisingly, it has claimed the attention of TV and magazine feature writers, and was given Period Living’s Best Restoration award for 2010. There is a real sense of generosity about this house, with its many comfortable sofas and armchairs, its good supply of bathrooms and loos, and plentiful supply of fittings and equipment.

Stunning decor and styling - Hen Ystablau

Downstairs, there is an extremely well-equipped kitchen comprising so many extras you wouldn’t expect, but would certainly appreciate: a 6-burner griddle/wok gas range with twin electric ovens, a big fridge/freezer, a bread-maker, food processors, a smoothie-maker, every possible utensil, and even a 1950s high chair. The kitchen work top is Welsh slate, and the island work surface is made from a discarded Victorian sweet shop counter. Wall cupboards are made from some of the mill’s original casement windows. The adjoining dining-room has a lovely big table, seating 12 to 14, with railway seats and church pews, and a comfortable Edwardian sofa. Once the mill’s machine room, what is now the sitting-room is a fabulous big space, with a great big wood burner to keep it warm, some good 1930s Chesterfields, and a gallery running around two sides of it, with bookshelves and – nice touch - a cosy reading corner. A useful utility/drying-room, and a bright 1930s-style downstairs loo complete the ground-floor offering.

Upstairs, the wonderful master bedroom has a king-size bed, a comfortable sitting area with a sofa and two armchairs, and an ensuite shower; and there are two further double bedrooms and a twin bedroom (with an extra trundle bed). Two bathrooms have lovely baths and fittings – one has both bath and power shower, plus a hand basin and loo; the other has just a bath, plus a double hand basin and loo. A useful separate loo is also situated upstairs.

The outside space at this coastal cottage in Wales

Outside, there is an extremely unusual garden, not for the faint-hearted: you climb a wonderful staircase (recently made by one of the owners, and with gates at both top and bottom) up to a sunny little garden with sitting-area with table and benches, a little grassy area, and some prettily planted flower beds. From up here, there are great views across the countryside. There is also a patio heater for slightly chilly evenings, plus a BBQ for outdoor meals.
