Pontescob Cottage ![]() About ten minutes from Abergavenny, below the Sugar Loaf Mountain lies the beautiful cottage of Pontescob. Newly restored as of April 2008.
Fishing in Season Pony Trekking Walking Relaxing Eating Out Situated on a sunny, sheltered little plateau right in the Black Mountains on the Eastern side of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Pontescob Cottage enjoys one of the loveliest locations imaginable. Perfect for honeymoons, romantic breaks, peaceful escapes, or family holidays, this self-catering holiday cottage in Wales is both well away from it all and very easily reached. Two and a half hours from London, an hour and a half from Birmingham, and an hour from Cardiff or Bristol make it a perfect get-away. This romantic cottage is set beside a quiet country single track lane, and next to the clear waters of the Grwyne river in a sweet little garden, overlooking the distinctive Pen y Fal or Sugar Loaf Mountain: it is a great place for a good walk up to a splendid view of the surrounding Black Mountains and over to the Brecon Beacons . Exclusive to the cottage, fishing (in season) is available on the excellent trout stream at the bottom of the garden and of course once you are at the cottage there are many splendid walks from the cottage. The well renowned and beautiful church of Partrishow is a couple of miles from the cottage.
![]() The 16th century stone-roofed miller’s cottage has recently been restored and decorated, using traditional materials – oak windows, lime mortar and putty, casein distemper, sheep’s wool insulation, lime wash and beeswax – with an effort to be as environmentally responsible and historically authentic as possible. The heating in the cottage is carbon neutral, being supplied by two top-of-the-range wood burning "Clearview" stoves, making it very cosy on cold winter days. The cottage has an entrance hall-cum-dining room, with a perfectly preserved and historically very important wooden screen dividing it from the kitchen next door. By some miracle, it has survived the centuries. A neat, well-equipped kitchen has all the necessities – a five-burner gas hob, an oven, a toaster, a good-sized fridge-freezer, roomy kitchen cupboards and a painted wooden dresser.

![]() The garden room is the place to relax: in front of a wood burning stove in the winter or, with the French doors flung open, outside on the stone terrace in summer with the peaceful sound of the river running past. Through a lovely old oak door, a winding stone staircase takes you up to a large master bedroom with old wooden floorboards, an antique brass double bed and a view across fields to the hills. Through to a little corridor and straight on to a children’s room, with ‘shorty’ bunk beds, and space for a travel cot for a baby or infant; left to a bright pretty bathroom with bath and power shower, loo, wash hand basin and heated towel rail. All the important elements are supplied so that you don’t have to overpack: washing-powder, washing-up liquid, tea towels, towels, bedding, loo paper and soap. The kitchen is fully stocked with kitchen equipment, crockery and cutlery. The picturesque turf-roofed cedar shed in the garden houses the washing-machine and dryer, hoover and ironing board, garden chairs, boiler and extra logs. Changeover days are Mondays and Fridays for week-long lets, weekends and midweek breaks. Unlike Blaentrothy Cottage which is mostly booked for 2008 Pontescob has just been finished so there is plenty of availability at the moment as of April! Blaentrothy Cottage
Luxury self-catering - Blaentrothy Cottage is situated in the middle of sheep farming country in what is a protected SSSI - 'Site of Special Scientific Interest'. The landscape is completely idyllic, and because it is an organic farm (and always has been), wild flower meadows, streams, copses and hedgerows are rich in wild fauna and flora. Beautiful views of the surrounding Welsh countryside and nearby the Black Mountains stretch out for miles around, making this the perfect Welsh romantic hideaway, as if you were in your own secluded log cabin.
Wales is a perfect place for a vacation. Available for year-round rental, Blaentrothy Cottages provides luxury self-catering accommodation for two people in Wales. It is a self-contained wing of Blaentrothy Farmhouse, in what used to be the old wain cabin (shelter for the hay carts) and the granary above. Stylishly decorated by the owners (one of whom used to work for House & Garden magazine) to a very high standard, the accommodation is comfortable and luxurious while retaining all the charm of the old farm building. All the fixtures and fittings are new, so that modern convenience is combined with the beauty of ancient oak beams, mullion windows and old red sandstone to create a wonderful fusion of old and new - a unique, luxury holiday accommodation. This cottage in Wales sleeps two adults, and a cot is available for a baby if required. The cottage has its own entrance, own footpath from the parking area and own private area of garden with outdoor seating on a flag-stoned terrace. An elegant spiral staircase connects the two floors. All our previous guests have agreed that this is a luxury vacation house in Wales.
