This amazing jewel of a house, situated in pretty, peaceful Brockweir village, is a superb place for romantic escapes, honeymoons, holidays for small families, or for investigating the sights of the lyrically beautiful Wye Valley. Grade 2*-listed, it is filled with fascinating historical detail – an Elizabethan door, a stone spiral staircase, a secret doorway and much more - as well as some beautifully designed modern features. But above all, it is a great place to stay: warm, cosy, romantic in the winter, with a top spec wood burner in the enormous fireplace; and cool in the summer, with a lovely raised garden to make the most of sunny days and far-reaching views. The house sleeps 2 to 4, plus an infant and a good dog, in a master bedroom with a king-size bed (and its own wood burner), and a twin bedroom.
'Stone walls and hefty doors ooze atmosphere in what is a very classy renovation.'
Sally Shalam, The Guardian

Downstairs, the front door leads into the sitting-room with its huge fireplace, wonderful wood burner and comfortable, cosy furniture. Swags of hops decorate the big oak beams, candles add atmosphere and gentle light, and a stone spiral acts as a secondary staircase up to the first floor. A big heavy Elizabethan door leads into the dining-room, which was once an outside courtyard. Here a contemporary open-tread oak staircase is interlaced with the old exterior stone one, splicing neatly into it at the top. Above the staircase, a vaulted wooden ceiling with roof light creates the sense of a French or Italian Renaissance covered courtyard, but with a warm modern feel. At the back of the house, the lovely kitchen has a breakfast table and a door leading outside – well-positioned for taking meals out into the garden or for chopping vegetables in the sunshine.

Cosy Wye cottage

Upstairs, the two bedrooms are comfortable and characterful and each has its own contemporary and luxurious bathroom. The master bedroom has the luxury of its own wood burning stove. There is also an upstairs snug sitting-room - perfect for reading quietly, for watching a different DVD to what's on downstairs, or for putting in a cot.

The enclosed garden is ingeniously raised right up high so as to make the most of lovely views, and to create privacy. Just outside the kitchen door, there is a gated area for off-road parking, plus a useful utility room (with extra loo). Then steps take you up to this grassed and terraced garden with views across the pretty village roof tops of Brockweir and the hills and woods of the beautiful Wye Valley beyond.

Although The Malt House has enjoyed a few incarnations in its long history, including being a cider house, a tea shop and a pottery, it has nevertheless been predominantly residential. Built at the end of the 16th- century by the Jayne family, who owned tracts of land in and around the forest, it is now owned by the same man who owns and renovated Monks’ Hall – an expert in restoration with an ability to interpret a building’s history in a sympathetic but clear-eyed way. He made sure that the 21st- century was also represented with some really good contemporary architectural details; and that the 21st- century visitor is well provided with comfortable furniture, proper entertainment and communication technology, a splendid kitchen, and luxurious bathrooms.

The Malt House is in the heart of the village of Brockweir, which in turn is in the heart of the lower Wye Valley. This is a beautiful little village in a beautiful area, protected from unsuitable development; and the river itself is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There are so many great things to do and see in the area, from investigating ancient monuments such as Tintern Abbey, to fun outdoorsy things like canoeing, cycling and walking. Or it is simply a superb location just to stay put and relax, perhaps venturing out for a gentle walk along the river bank or to make a visit to the really good, friendly local pub only a few steps away. In fact, what with the village shop just up the hill, there's no need to use a car at all  if you don't want to.
