Downstairs, there are two front rooms – a very prettily decorated sitting-room with a wood-burner, and a play-room where children can spread out their toys. Behind, there is a spacious, beautifully equipped kitchen with a sunny eating area (which leads out through French doors onto a terrace and the garden), plus a downstairs loo. A utility room and back porch are useful for leaving muddy boots and hanging up coats.

Upstairs, there are two double bedrooms, one with a dressing-room (including loo and hand basin) which leads out onto a little roof terrace; a twin bedroom, and a small single bedroom. A lovely family bathroom comprises a glamorous roll-top bath, and a separate shower and loo.

The garden has everything: a sunny patio which overlooks the terraced garden, a lawned area, and a shaded loggia for eating outside on hot days. The cottage is cloaked by beautiful deciduous woods behind, thick with bluebells and wood anemones in spring. Secret paths to investigate and little fairy doorways hidden in trees will entrance children, and a peaceful little clearing makes a perfect place for adults to enjoy a drink in the summer. (There is even a bottle-opener attached to a tree!) Some black-faced sheep in an adjacent field are happy to make friends. Children can feed them with sheep nuts supplied by the owner, and a safely-covered fish pond provides children with hours of happy entertainment. At night, star-gazing from under the loggia or snuggled up on the roof terrace can be fascinating or romantic (or both), depending on your mood. There’s no light pollution, so the sky is properly black. In the daytime, views across the Wye Valley are just beautiful.

Rosewell can be the place to relax and enjoy the peace of its lovely surroundings; or it can be used as a base for a multitude of wonderful things to do or interesting places to visit in the area. Children will adore the steam train which runs through the Forest of Dean, the dedicated cycling track at Pedalabikeaway, the caves at Clearwell, and (for older ones) canoeing down the River Wye. For those who enjoy ancient monuments, Tintern Abbey is just down the road, and the beautiful old county town of Monmouth is ten minutes away. Walking in the area is superb, with many footpaths winding through the forest, or following the course of the River Wye. Eating out is good, too, from Michelin-starred eating at the Crown at Whitebrook to good pub food and a pint at The Boat Inn at Redbrook, or excellent Italian bistro food at Praego’s in Monmouth. For more details of what to do in the area, please click on the Local Information link at the top of this page.
