A perfectly lovely cottage with a stunning view across the Wye Valley, Rosewell is snug enough to be a romantic retreat or a restorative weekend escape for a couple, but roomy enough for a small family or two couples. Surrounded by its own garden, with bluebell woods, fields, and the river Wye at the bottom of the hill, this pretty cottage makes a wonderful get-away. But it is also close to a charming village with a really good pub, an excellent community shop-cum-cafe, and only 20 minutes from the M4 Severn Bridge.
"We Returned from Rosewell last Friday. It was AMAZING - the best holiday cottage we've ever stayed in. I cried when we left!" - Guest tweet
Downstairs, there are two front rooms – a very prettily decorated sitting-room with a wood-burner, and a play-room where children can spread out their toys. Behind, there is a spacious, beautifully equipped kitchen with a sunny eating area (which leads out through French doors onto a terrace and the garden), plus a downstairs loo. A utility room and back porch are useful for leaving muddy boots and hanging up coats.
Upstairs, there is a master-bedroom with a king-size bed, and a twin bedroom next-door. There is also a room with a standard double bed (plus ensuite dressing-room with loo, hand basin and doors leading out onto a little roof terrace). This bedroom can be used instead of the twin bedroom, if liked. A lovely family bathroom comprises a glamorous roll-top bath, and a separate shower and loo.
The garden has everything: a sunny patio which overlooks the terraced garden, a lawned area at the bottom, fields to one side, and beautiful deciduous woods behind, thick with bluebells and wood anemones in spring. Secret paths to investigate and little fairy doorways hidden in trees will entrance children, and a peaceful little clearing makes a perfect place for adults to enjoy a drink in the summer. (There is even a bottle-opener attached to a tree!) Some extremely sweet sheep in an adjacent field are happy to make friends. Children can feed them with sheep nuts supplied by the owner, and a safely-covered fish pond provides children with hours of happy entertainment. At night, star-gazing from under the loggia or snuggled up on the roof terrace can be fascinating or romantic (or both), depending on your mood. There’s no light pollution, so the sky is properly black. In the daytime, views across the Wye Valley are just beautiful.
Rosewell can be the place to relax and enjoy the peace of its lovely surroundings; or it can be used as a base for a multitude of wonderful things to do or interesting places to visit in the area. Children will adore the steam train which runs through the Forest of Dean, the dedicated cycling track at Pedalabikeaway, the caves at Clearwell, and (for older ones) canoeing down the River Wye. For those who enjoy ancient monuments, Tintern Abbey is just down the road, and the beautiful old county town of Monmouth is ten minutes away. Walking in the area is superb, with many footpaths winding through the forest, or following the course of the River Wye. Eating out is good, too, from pub food and a pint at The Boat Inn at Redbrook to excellent Italian bistro food at Prego’s in Monmouth. By email: "Hi Lucy,
We wanted to say an enormous thank you for your beautiful cottage and all the love and time you've put into it.. It was amazing to arrive to a fire already laid and mulled wine to put on and goodies to eat. Such a lovely touch. It was such fun to explore the cottage and marvel at the lovely light and views when we woke the next morning. It was the perfect place for us to stay and enjoy being together as a family. We really appreciated the toys for the babies to be able to play with and a high chair to save bringing two and we all enjoyed your books, your lovely paintings, furnishings and decor and being able to feed the sheep and fish. It's such a magical place for walks, and we'd definitely love to come back and explore more at different times of year. Kevin especially loved sitting on the veranda, despite the weather, and it would be lovely to spend more time in the garden when the weather is warmer. Our daughter with the twins lives in Bristol so it meant her partner was still able to get to work for a few days but have some holiday time too which was ideal.I think they both valued having more hands to help with the babies and being able to have some time without them!" Jo, Exeter

"Beautiful house in a fabulous location. Great walks. The boys loved the wildlife, expecially seeing the stag!! Hope to come back soon." The Nicholsons, Southsea
"What a magical place! We loved it so much, we'll be back. What a beautiful house; can I buy it? Lovely, lovely, lovely... The best way to spend your 50th birthday, despite the weather. The cottage completely exceeded our expectations." Sharon & Co, Somerset
"Have you ever been to a place where you felt so at home that you just wanted to stay? Beautiful views from every window, lovely walks, friendly and welcoming people, fantastic food, eccentric sheep, wondrous wildlife. We'd move here tomorrow if our girls would let us." Simon, Carla and the girls, London
"Such a beautiful cottage in a glorious setting. Thank you for a wonderful, relaxing stay. Loved feeding the friendly sheep, even saw some deer on a nearby walk we took. Log-burner kept us warm and cosy. We've had a lovely few days of peace and quiet (oh, and a very comfy bed!). Long, hot baths, short cold walks. Thank you again." Daniel and Rachel
