Wood burning stove in beamed living room
  • Sleeps a couple, plus a baby
  • Incredible views from the terrace
  • Excellent French restaurant within walking distance
  • A short drive to a very good local pub
  • Up to two well-behaved dogs welcome
  • Lots of local walks straight from the door

The Two Acres is situated in the secretive but sensationally beautiful Golden Valley, with an ever-changing view across undulating farmland meadows to the Black Mountains beyond. These mountains are transfixing: they have beguiled writers from C.S. Lewis to Bruce Chatwin. The Engels live here at Fair Oak farm, where The Two Acres is located, and Matthew is a writer and journalist. Hilary supervised the painstaking transformation of this perfect cottage for a couple (and the one next door - The Bourbon - which can be rented alongside The Two Acres to create interconnected accommodation for two couples).

Living room Kitchen

Downstairs, the lovely cosy sitting-room has a big sofa and an armchair facing the picturesque fireplace with its wood burner and old bread oven. There is a dining-table and chairs, and a bench along the wall below the windows, which amusingly incorporates a three-hole wooden privy seat, now beautifully scrubbed and polished. The small, but perfectly-formed, kitchen leads off this room, which in turn leads out onto the terrace, where you can watch the sun set behind the mountains.

Bedroom in restored cottage in rural Herefordshire

Upstairs is the bedroom with ensuite bathroom and amazing wooden king-size bedstead, made by local craftsman, Iain McKenzie, beautifully carved in 2012 from oak provided by nature several hundred years earlier. You can even get more fantastic mountain views while wallowing in the bath.

Things to do around The TWO ACRES

The Two Acres is a place to relax and relish rural life. Snuggle up by the fire in autumn or winter; and in warmer weather, sit out on the terrace to soak up the sun and the views. Or get stuck into the life of the farm: walk through ancient woodland, across pastures full of birdsong and rare flowers. In autumn you can watch the leaves change, help with the cider-making on the farm's newly-restored ancient cider-press. Or make your own apple juice. You could walk the huge network of footpaths in the vicinity, or yomp up a mountain or two, to be seduced by yet more views. There are beautiful churches a shortish walk away. And you can drive to castles, cathedrals, glorious 'black-and-white villages' and the book town of Hay-on-Wye. You won’t go hungry either – first-rate restaurants and pubs are lavishly distributed over this area. There is even a really superb French restaurant just a walk away from the cottage (reservation is required) called Toi et Moi (01981 240244).

'What a little gem of a place, with the most fantastic views! Thank you so much to our hosts, who were absolutely charming. A very special thank you from Lulu the King Charles spaniel, for welcoming her along too.' Stu, Kimball and Lulu

'What an absolutely perfect little hideaway for our ‘minimoon’! The views are just breathtaking, and we loved exploring the local area…. Thanks for recommending Toi et Moi: we had an exceptional meal there and fantastic service.' Richard and Juliet, Leytonstone

'We live about 600 miles away and a 12-hour drive: worth every one of the 720 minutes it took to get here! We loved the walking, whether just around the farm, or further afield, up hills and down dales: spectacular scenery and loads of wildlife; the churches at St Margarets and Rowlestone; Toi et Moi; and local cider. Thank you Matthew, Hilary and Vika for your warm welcome. Eleven Minutes Late had me in tears, I was laughing so much.' Lester and Ally, Wester Ross

'Completely magical place: a truly beautiful cottage to stay in. We absolutely loved it! Perfect for our songwriting and novel writing… We will definitely return.' Mark and Carolyn, Northfield

'The most beautiful place I have ever stayed. Perfect cosy little cottage with everything you need and views to die for. Superb location and beautifully renovated. Fantastic hosts – warm, friendly and welcoming. Thank you for showing us your horses. Our baby, Harry has had the best time! Check out the River Usk: great for swimming and body-boarding. Will definitely be back for more.' Rebecca and Baby Harry, Royal Tunbridge Wells

'Had an absolutely fantastic weekend. Stayed in both cottages with friends, completed two full days’ walking, and very pleased to ‘come home’ to the cottages to relax and wind down and enjoy the wonderful views. Hosts very accommodating. We can recommend The Temple Bar for Sunday lunch.' Debbie, Andy and Scooby, Edgbaston

'Our third visit to The Two Acres. Got lucky with the weather again and did lots of walking. Also visited The Hardwick restaurant near Abergavenny – great evening. We can’t get enough of this lovely cottage and this beautiful area. Thanks again.' Richard and Judith, Marden

By email: 'Just wanted to drop you a line to say that we had a lovely weekend at the Two Acres - a beautiful cottage and lovely hosts. Thank you for a clear, smooth and friendly booking process - all hugely appreciated. I will recommend to others.' Camilla

'We fell in love with our little cottage! The wind howled outside but we were snug with the fire burning and the curtains drawn. We arrived at night so weren’t aware what an amazing view would greet us when it was morning. This is a stunning place – we loved learning about the history of the farm and walking round the fields – a great place to bring in the New Year. We felt we had totally escaped…' Lucy and James, Salisbury

'Lovely characterful cottage. Thank you for a relaxing honeymoon. We’ve really enjoyed the walks around the area… We had a cosy evening with delicious food and warm hospitality at The Carpenters Arms in Walterstone. And don’t have a late lunch if you’ve booked dinner at Toi et Moi – absolutely delicious, and you have to have all three courses!' Tim and Katharine, Carmarthen

'A beautiful tranquil location where the hustle and bustle of real life just disappears for a while. An extremely well-equipped house with real attention to detail has made the whole stay incredibly relaxing. Thank you!' Louise and Duncan, Bedfordshire
