Woodlands is a beautifully situated private country cottage, now extended into a good-sized holiday home for 2 to 6 adults, plus 2 children. An infant and up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome, too. Surrounded by 35 acres of its own land, much of it an SSSI, and a large garden, it is wonderfully secluded, but not far either from useful amenities. A terrace with hot tub and garden furniture makes the most of the dramatic plunging tree-fringed view down into the Usk Valley; and a light-filled oak-framed conservatory sitting-room makes a fantastic space for year-round relaxation – whether in sunny weather with the doors flung open; or in front of the raised open fire in the winter months.
The house also has a second smaller sitting-room with another open fire, a TV and a piano – great for those times when not everyone in the party wants to be doing or watching the same things. It opens out onto its own terrace via French doors, again with the same wonderful view.
The L-shaped kitchen/dining-room has everything you will need for family catering and entertaining, as well as French doors out to yet another terrace with garden furniture and a BBQ. Adjacent to the kitchen is a downstairs shower room with loo and hand basin.
Upstairs are three double bedrooms, plus a twin room for children. The back bedrooms – one double and the twin open out onto a back terrace with access up to a lawn above and the trampoline. The master double has an ensuite bathroom, and there is an additional family bathroom on this floor.
THINGS TO DO AROUND Woodlands
Woodlands has 35 acres of land to enjoy, so you don't even need to step off the property to enjoy great walks and games of hide-and-seek. But beyond this, local walking is wonderful, too, whether you walk west down into the Usk Valley, or venture east into the Lower Wye Valley to enjoy the River Wye, the Forest of Dean and all the sights that proliferate in that area. There is a great picnic area at Black Rock near Caldicott (part of the Welsh Coastal Path), where you can watch the 'lava-net' fisherman wading out and throwing out their nets to catch fish, a practice that has been going on for centuries.
Local activities include fly and coarse-fishing, cycling in Chepstow Park Woods or at Pedalabikeaway in the Forest of Dean, and natural swimming in the rivers. For sight-seers, the area is rich in important ancient monuments, such as Tintern Abbey, the Roman remains at Caerwent and Caerleon, and the magnificent Norman castle of Chepstow, strategically and picturesquely-positioned on the limestone river cliffs.
There is plenty of choice for eating out: at closeby are The Star Pub on Star Hill (great steaks) and The Carpenters in Llanishen, which serves good pub food in huge portions – great salads and fish, good beers and wine; in Chepstow, you will find The Riverside Wine Bar, a tapas bar on the river which is good for a snack and a drink; The Lime Tree, a good Mediterranean bistro, with jazz evenings on Thursdays; The Mythos Meze Bar, a good, informal, noisy-but-fun Greek restaurant. The St. Pierre Marriott Hotel & Country Club, in the countryside between Chepstow and Caldicott, is a resort with golf, pool, gym, spa, and a restaurant which serves good food.
Shopping is good in the country town of Monmouth, about 15 minutes' drive away. It has independent shops including two butchers and a really good greengrocer, but it also has a Waitrose, an M&S food and a Co-op. There are plenty of cafes, boutiques, a market, some good Indian restaurants, two Italian bistros and a Thai pop-up.
