Angel Barn takes its name from the little statue by the doorway, and this angel would smile more broadly if she could see the interior. A spacious hallway lets light pour in from the roof lights, and creates a feeling of airiness. The living-room is open-plan, with kitchen to one side of the glazed doors, and sitting-area to the other. The doors open out onto a private sitting-out area, with lawn and climbing-frame beyond. The owners bought the whole small-holding at auction in 2010 and have been saving it from dereliction ever since. Angel Barn has had a few incarnations, beginning as a little corrugated iron barn, and is now in its final state as an oak timber-framed barn, combining traditional features and modern comfort.

The garden has sitting-area, lawn and a place for children to play. A big climbing frame with swings, rope ladder and slide will keep them happy for hours. Willow fencing adds a lovely textural feel. These panels are woven by one of the owners, who also grows it for all kinds of local uses, including supplying the local primary school with willow rods for creative use in Forest School sessions, and a local florist who orders the particularly beautiful red and yellow-coloured varieties. In spring you can take home a couple of willow rods of your own, stick them in the ground and watch as they grow at a very satisfying speed - a nice memento of your stay.

Walks extend straight from the door, so you can happily enjoy the immediate locality, or go a little further and strike into the dramatic Black Mountains themselves for big vistas, interesting churches, wild ponies, pony trekking, mountain-biking, and steeper climbs. Llanthony Priory, in the heart of these mountains, is a fascinating 12th-century abbey in a stunning location. It's a good starting place for walks along Offa's Dyke, with views to wow you. You can finish off your walking there, too, with a refreshing pint at the pub conveniently situated right in the abbey ruins. The other side of the Black Mountains, is the biggest natural lake in Wales, Llangorse Lake, which has an activity centre offering horse-riding, indoor rock-climbing (great for rainy days), and an outdoor high rope course.

Local to Angel Barn, Longtown has a brilliant village shop, with very helpful opening hours, and a pub. In nearby Michaelchurch Escley, The Bridge Inn is rightly popular, and has a good atmosphere and generous, well-cooked food with a South American twist. Hay-on-Wye is half-an-hour away, and everyone waxes lyrical about this characterful town. In addition to its world-renowned second-hand bookshops, it also has excellent shops, galleries, antique emporia, cafes and pubs. There is also an independent cinema for a really good choice of films. The Warren, just outside Hay, is a shingle river bank, perfect for picnics and wild swimming. You can also hire canoes in Hay for wonderful river adventures.
