Picturesquely situated in the corner of a wild flower meadow and orchard, this beautiful shepherd’s hut is roomy, comfortable and cosy, with its wood burner and surprisingly big bed. There is a heavenly view of hilly border country from the doorway of the hut – wonderful to sit and watch as the sun slips down behind the hill on a summer’s evening, leaving a sky full of the brightest stars. Offa’s Dyke footpath is very close and the lovely town of Presteigne, with great shops, pubs and cafes, is a very short drive (or walk) away.
The interior of the shepherd’s hut itself has a good-sized double bed, a really effective wood burner, and a table and chairs for enjoying indoor meals.
Close by, there is a really well-equipped camping kitchen: undercover, open-sided, ship-shape, and cheerfully furnished. This has everything you need for good easy simple cooking, as well as a table and chairs in case of rain. Presteigne has shops with great local supplies, such as wonderful bakery products, fresh local fruit and veg, and locally-caught river fish – great for barbecuing at any time of the year. And, somehow, food cooked outside is much more appetising.
Next-door to the kitchen is the shower – a simple 20-litre solar-heated shower with wash basin. Finally, a state-of-the-art compost loo sits in a little hut at the end of the field – smell-free and perfectly civilised to use.
The meadow is great for children and dogs to run around on (and there are swings), or for taking little strolls. The owner is very happy for you to pick fruit from the trees for your own use while at the shepherd’s hut, as well as whatever vegetable or herb is in season in the guests' kitchen garden at the bottom of the hill.
Things to do around this Welsh Shepherd's Hut
A walk into Presteigne is truly picturesque and only ten minutes away, where there are good cafes, a pub and a restaurant for you to choose from. It is so nice to stroll back and not have to worry about driving. However, a short ride in the car will take you to many really interesting places in the area – beauty spots, ancient monuments, great shopping, superb hill walks, and all kinds of outdoor activities. Hay-on-Wye is a half-hour drive away and is well-known for its second-hand bookshops, boutiques, antique emporia and its annual literary festival in June. Ludlow, the same distance in the other direction, is a really handsome town, great for interesting shopping and good eating - and it has a fine castle to boot.

'What a fantastic three-day break we have just experienced! It was so nice to see flowers in the kitchen and hut on our arrival, not to mention the complementary breakfast ingredients. The Shepherd's Hut and the village of Presteigne were just perfect for us to get away from it all and completely relax. Many thanks. PS what a great comfy bed!!!' Lee, Kate and Jessica from Emsworth
'What a wonderful experience. We loved it and hope to visit again for longer to experience the outside cooking. So peaceful and beautiful.
Lovely villages nearby and loads of charity shops and antique markets to browse around. Lovely and warm with log burner. Loved, loved the swing. Thank you.' Thank you Jason and Adele, West Glamorgan
'Dear Andrea and Jonathan, you nearly had two permanent residents! We have really enjoyed our weekend here and will most definitely be back again. Thanks ever so much.' Jim and Nicky, Hereford

To Andrea & Jonathan,
Thank you for a wonderful break. The Shepherds Hut was fantastic – every little detail was taken care of and you have really gone above and beyond with what you are offering. On our arrival we were greeted with fresh flowers & croissants in the cabin and the log burner already on the go. Add to this the beautiful views from the surroundings & your hospitality, this holiday was everything we wanted.
We will definitely be back and I have recommended to all my family, friend & colleagues already!
