Situated on a beautiful country estate, this adorable Victorian cottage is wonderfully situated down a private track, right by a stream, and surrounded by fields. Peace, perfect peace, and privacy, is what you will find here. The cottage is surrounded by a lovely big garden with a stream, a sheltered patio, flower beds, shrubs, trees, and plenty of lawn. The cottage itself is light-filled and very prettily decorated by one of the owners, an interior designer. Recently refurbished, it is luxuriously comfortable and well-equipped – perfect for a romantic stay or honeymoon for a couple, or a holiday base for a small family.
18% couple’s discount available outside the holidays (based on the use of one bedroom only). Select this option when booking, and the price will reduce automatically.
The living-room comprises a good-sized kitchen with all you could need for easy self-catering, a place to sit and eat, and a very comfortable sitting-area with sofa, armchair and TV. A wood burner warms the place well in winter; and in summer, the French doors open out onto the sunny sheltered patio and garden.
The master bedroom upstairs has a wonderful big bed with a view through the window towards the Skirrid Mountain (the eastern extreme of the Brecon Beacons National Park). A big luxurious bathroom with roll-top bath, big separate shower, loo and hand basin is ensuite. The children’s bedroom sleeps a child in a single bed and an infant in a cot.
Offa’s Dyke passes close to this cottage, as does the circular Three Castles' Walk, so you are within easy reach of some spectacular walking – both straight from the door, or in the lovely Black Mountains, an easy drive away. This is rural Monmouthshire at its best, and the cottage is lucky enough to be situated on a beautiful country estate, with all the peace and privacy that that entails. Great things to see start nearby, with White Castle dramatically situated atop a neighbouring hill. This was a garrison castle for Norman troops, and is very well-preserved, with a moat and splendid views in all directions.
Head south-east, and the majestic river Wye isn’t far either, with all the sights and adventures that a big river can offer: lovely riverside villages, ancient sites, canoeing, wild swimming, gliding, golf, fishing, rock-climbing, and yet more castles. Family pursuits are extensive: with cycling on tracks through woodland, high-wire and zip-wire fun in the tree-tops, a steam train through the forest, a butterfly zoo and maze, limestone caves, and an ancient, mysterious woodland park, families can be kept amused for days and days.
This part of Wales is rightly proud of its pubs and restaurants, where all kinds of eating is available – from delicious authentic Italian pizzas in Abergavenny, to Michelin-starred dining at the wonderful Walnut Tree Inn just a few minutes drive away. The local pub does an excellent hamburger (amongst other things), and has a lively, friendly community atmosphere.
