This brilliant Turkmenistani-style yurt was handmade by the owners – every rib was coppiced and crafted by hand, every detail lovingly executed in an ingenious but simple way. The yurt is spacious but cosy with a big double bed, a copper slipper bath with hot running water, a wood burner, a sofa, and a wooden annex with all the necessities in place – a spacious kitchen, a ‘long-drop’ compost loo, and an outside shower with a view. Lined with felt, which is an excellent insulator, the Turkomen is cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather. Sleeps 2 (plus an infant and up to 2 good dogs).

The owners, Bryony and Tim, came up with this concept of highly individualised indoor/outdoor living, having been inspired during their life in Botswana by camps in the Makgadikgadi salt pan game reserve. The way of life there is one of unity with the environment, the footprint a feather-light touch on the landscape. Tim and Bryony’s yurt is similarly as green, with solar-generated electricity and locally-sourced coppiced wood. The whole family was involved in the project, and they all made the yurt from ash and sweet chestnut cut from the woods on their land, guided by the expertise of Toby Fairlove.

Things to do around Mimi's Tree Yurt

There are lots of walks straight from the doorstep. Offa’s Dyke path is approximately 2 miles away on top of Hatterall Hill, which is the gateway to walking in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The owners can give you tips on great local walks, too. Lovely churches and Norman castles are everywhere, and Hay-on-Wye is a must for book-lovers and antique-hunters. The Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral is one of the most important historical relics in the world; and Cardiff with its museums, lovely Victorian shopping arcades and redeveloped Bay area is well worth a visit.

This area is a foodie’s dream, being well-populated with top class places to eat, from the renowned Walnut Tree, and Stephen Terry’s restaurant, The Hardwick (of The Great British Menu fame), to great pubs of all kinds. The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny provides a prize-winning tea to remember. The local pub is the Carpenters Arms at Walterstone, just a short walk away, and provides good robust pub food and a wonderful old fashioned atmosphere in which to sample the local ales.

From the visitors book at Mimi's Tree Yurt

"Thankyou so much for a wonderful break. The yurt is amazing- so peaceful and natural. Having an outdoor shower on a chilly morning has to be experienced at least once as does the bath!! so sad to leave this slice of tranquility." Holly and James

"Bath, shower, bed, goat skins, woodburner, outdoor fire, , longdrop loo, maserful and ingenious craftsmanship. And walks, pubs, silience, sunshine, air and rest. Incomparable! PS Dog loved it too." Martin and Jillian

"Thankyou for providing the most idyllic space to relax in and connect with nature. We both have had such a wonderful time and created memories that we shall share for our lifetime! What a comfortable bed! What an incredible view! What an amazing bath/ shower! Thanks so much." Kyla and Mark

"To echo previous comments- wow! Craftsmanship and attention to detail. This was clearly crafted by skill, care and passion. The location is perfect with Vera at the Carpenters Arms just a short walk away. Well worth a visit to the friendliest pub ever! We also walked to the top of the sugar loaf which has incredible views and seemed like a good time to propose.... so I did! Luckily she said yes. A place we will never forget. Thankyou very much!" Steve and Lisa

"4th in this area in 2 yrs - hoked! 2nd yurt experience in the borders and 4th yurt ever and by far the best. Magical. Weather, which was tremendous, helped, but those views and the fabulous attention to detail in the yurt, so fabulous. And Vera at the Carpenters Arms a real gem. Thankyou!" Eric and Anita

"After trawling the internet for our first "glampling" experience, we clapped eyes on this place and booked it withing the hour. Has it matched our expectations? No, it surpassed them! My fella is a craftsman and he truly appreciates the 100s of hours that must have gone into creating such a wonderful, magical place to escape from the hustle and bustle of London. The wood burning stove, the brass bed, and the copper bath (bliss!) surely the holy trinity of glamping! Thankyou so much for a lovely stay, we will be telling others how great this place is (my sis stayed in Gabriel's yurt after seeing Mimi's was fully booked up and also had a smashing time! xx" Candice and Guy

"Goodness me, what a lovely tranquild, peaceful place. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here - so much so that we are going to try out Gabriel's Yurt in a few month's time. Absolutely the most relaxing, enjoyable holiday we have ever had- climbing the tree, walking, sitting, watching the scenery and nature. Pure Bliss." Karen and Matt

"Quite a different experience for a librarian and software engineer from London, but we totally loved it. The peace and quiet of the location was fantastic and the unique and characterful feel of the yurt and cabin was great." Will and Gem

"Just what the Doctor ordered! Very comfortable weekend in blissful harmony. Thankyou." Vicky and Peter

"Beautiful location - perfect for a proposal - so I did, and she said yes! Very happy few days, thank you." Nicola & John

"Fantastic craftsmanship! What a lovely yurt experience." David & Karen, Bucks

"Fabulous stay - a brilliant yurt in a lovely setting." John & Sue, Sussex

"A haven from reality! We want one!" Debby & Keith, Hants

"We had a lovely time: the yurt is very beautiful, the countryside is wonderful, and even the weather was kind to us - thank you!" Paul & Gill, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

"The yurt was every bit as great as the website suggested. Despite the weather we had a wonderful four days in this unique haven of peace. Bryony and Tim were very welcoming, yet respected our privacy. The yurt was extremely well equipped, luxurious yet unspoiled, and certainly unconventional. We will definitely return and as we wrote in the visitor's book, we couldn't have wished for a more special place to celebrate our silver wedding." Gail & Kevin Nicholls, Lymington, Hants (by email)

'Wow! What a fantastic, creation/ escape/ hideout/ snug bug/ cosy-in/ heart warming home. We feel so relaxed here and are definitely coming back very soon...There is care, love and a personal touch in every aspect of here, which fills you with a warm cosy feel as soon as you open the door.... Thank you so much for all your hardwork and personal touches in making this place an accessible, beautiful and inspirational place to come.' Lulu and Tom, Bristol

'Such a beautiful yurt, in a stunning location. Loved the bath, and even the outdoor shower was surprisingly warming on a very cold (snowy!) November morning! Thanks so much for your hospitality - we'll be back!' Theo and Tess, Brighton
