The Carslaws, Ilkley

Offa’s Lodge makes you sigh with happiness when you see it for the first time – and the sighs only get happier  as you explore it further. The owners are true enthusiasts and have successfully transformed other buildings before this one. This is their latest project, and what a gem it is. It is situated in stunning countryside, with Offa’s Dyke path just yards away, but is conveniently close to useful local shops and very good pubs and restaurants. The Forest of Dean and the River Wye both provide endless opportunities for outdoor fun of all kinds, great sightseeing, and just the pure joy of being in such lovely surroundings.

This lovely cottage is available for couples at a 12% discount outside the school holidays based on the use of one double bed only (when you book for 2 adults, the price will be reduced automatically).

Downstairs, there is a spacious kitchen, with a utility room and a shower-room-cum-loo off it, a dining-room with an antique pine dresser, and a very cosy sitting-room with a fantastic wood burner, two comfy sofas and an extended armchair - just the spot for super-relaxation. It is heaven to sit here after an energetic walk, with weary legs extended, a book in hand, a drink on the table, and the wood burner glowing. In the summer, leave the door to the garden ajar and let the birdsong drift in..........

Upstairs, there is a master bedroom with an antique brass double bed and lots of hanging space and storage; a twin bedroom with a pair of very pretty French antique single beds, and a family bathroom. Both bedrooms are luxuriously carpeted, and decorated with pretty Vanessa Arbuthnott fabrics.

Outside, the enchanting cottage garden, bordered by an old stone wall, is pretty throughout the year. Tulips in April are taken over by foxgloves in May, then roses in June – and so on. The feeling of timelessness creates a wonderfully relaxing sense of escape. A lovely wooden summerhouse makes the perfect place for children to play, or for adults to sit and dream. Inside there is a comfy sofa bed and wifi, making it a great extra space for use in warm weather. There is a little stone terrace with a rose-covered arch and garden furniture for fine days. The outlook from the garden peeps through trees down towards the river valley below, where charming little Bigsweir Bridge takes the road from one riverbank to the other.

Things to do around Offa's Lodge

The cottage is ideally placed for whatever visitors are inclined to do – whether just relaxing in the cottage and enjoying the quintessential cottage garden, or setting off for more strenuous activities. Walking is superbly catered for with the Wye Valley Walk and Offa’s Dyke nearby, as well as an enormous network of paths and trails through the forest or along the river. Cyclists are very fortunate to have the Pedalabikeaway dedicated cycle trail near Coleford, with circuits for all ages and abilities. For families, Go Ape! is a superb network of high wires and zip wires, and the steam train through the forest is wonderful. The caves at Clearwell are a fantastic network of natural caves, mysterious and atmospheric – not a surprise to learn that Merlin and Dr. Who have been filmed inside them many times. Offa's Lodge is a very reasonable drive to the Brecon Beacons National Park to the west, for superb walking and beautiful open, far-reaching views; and similarly, eastwards to the scenic Cotswolds for picturesque honey-coloured villages - both areas being under an hour's drive away.

A couple of miles up the road is your local - the George Inn at St Briavels, which offers good pub fare in the setting of a 16th century traditional inn. In fact foodies will rejoice in the fact that this area is great for eating out – whether it is gastropub cooking at the Inn at Penallt, or pub grub with a pint at The Boat by the river at Penallt and the Brockweir Country Inn in the centre of pretty Brockweir village. The Butcher's Arms in the village of Clearwell is offering guests staying at Offa's Lodge a discount on their meals (not in conjunction with any other discounts). Monmouth at 10 minutes away is a lovely county town with all the food shops – and more - that you could possibly need during your stay.

Via email to the office:

Hi Caroline,

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Offa's Lodge, and just wanted to say we had a fabulous time there.  The cottage was even nicer in real life than in the pictures - we loved it - so comfortable and cosy and plenty of space for us all.  Loved the summer house too and the garden was absolutely beautiful - so full of colour - was fantastic to sit outside on the two lovely sunny days we had whilst there and take it all in - very relaxing.  Fantastic location - close to everything - walking, canoeing, cycling - the kids went mountain biking in the forest and also went canoeing on the River Wye, which was so easy to book (on previous holidays to Wales we had tried to do this but it was so expensive per person and so many stipulations that we were put off, but we called up the canoe hire company in Monmouth and popped down in the afternoon and after a bit of a safety talk, were on our way - easy peasy and the kids loved it).  Please tell Nicky and David, the owners, that they have a lovely home.

Kind regards,

Jayne Field

'We've stayed in many holiday cottages over the years and this has got to be the best one yet. So comfy, with everything we need. Had a couple of muddy bike rides in the forest and it was lovely to come back, have baths, and warm up in front of the fire. The brownies and cordial were fab. Thank you so much. Will highly recommend Offa's Lodge.' The Harris family, Plymouth

'After struggling to decide what to get my parents as a thank you present for all they did at our wedding, we chose a weekend at Offa`s Lodge. We made a great choice! After scoffing the brownies, we were faced with the dilemma of whether to change the locks, demand squatters' rights and live here forever.' The Pownalls and the Stewarts, Shropshire

'What a wonderful cottage!! We have had a wonderfully relaxing break which got off to a fabulous start with the home made bakewell and elderflower cordial. Thank you. Should you ever consider selling... We take lots of cottage breaks in the UK and this is definitely top of the list; we will look forward to a return visit.' Ian and Lesley

'The cottage looked good in the pictures but it's even better in reality!! I will take some decorating ideas home with me. Inspiring! Very well stocked. There wasn't a thing we wished for that wasn't here. Thank you.' Mark and Ineke, Harwich

'We've had a fabulously relaxing week in this impeccable cottage. Thank you!' Jane, St. Albans

'What a lovely happy stay in a beautifully furnished and homely cottage. Appreciated the Caroline Zoob prints and Vanessa Arbuthnott fabrics; home from home!
