Orchard Barn is very aptly named, being located in beautiful apple-orchard countryside near Hay-on-Wye. Here, field upon field of frothing blossom are a wonderful feature of the area, as are the delightful black-and-white timber-framed houses of Eardisley and other nearby villages. The barn itself is a smart, well-considered conversion with plenty of light and space. The whole of one side is comprised of glazed doors opening out onto the sunny patio and enormous garden. Lovely old beams, luxurious bathrooms, magical views across to the distant hills – a superb place to stay for couples or small families. Sleeps 2 to 4, plus an infant and up to 2 good dogs.
Orchard Barn is all on one floor, which makes it the obvious choice for people who can’t manage stairs (but it is not fitted out for wheelchair accessibility), and for people who want to relax on holiday and not have to police their toddlers on the stairways. The good-sized sitting-room has a wood burner, two comfortable sofas and an armchair, plus a TV with DVD, and French doors opening out onto the terrace. The kitchen next-door is great – a roomy eating area with doors out onto the terrace, and a lovely work space with a range oven with 5-burner gas hob, and a double butler’s sink. There is also a utility room with washing-machine, tumble-dryer, airer, and a loo.
The master bedroom has its own ensuite shower room with loo and hand basin; the twin bedroom has access to a separate family bathroom with bath, shower, loo and hand basin. Both bedrooms also have glazed doors opening out onto the garden.
The garden is enclosed by a 5ft high secure fence, with a sunny terrace, lawn, garden furniture and a BBQ. There is plenty of space for children or dogs to run around on and play ball games, and they can easily be seen from each room in the house.
Things to do around Orchard Barn, Eardisley, Herefordshire
This is a beautiful part of the countryside, with wonderful walks of all kinds – from meandering riverside strolls to steep climbs up big hills for breathtaking views and great picnic spots. For those who prefer a drive or a cycle, the Black and White Trail is a fascinating tour linking picturesque local villages with their vernacular timber-framed houses. Local produce is varied and of high quality, and can be enjoyed in good local pubs and restaurants, or, for self-catering, an enormous selection can be found at the nearby Oakchurch Country Store (described by locals and the ‘Harrods of Herefordshire’). Bookies will be delighted by the barn’s proximity to Hay-on-Wye as will those who treasure independent local shops, boutiques, galleries and antique emporia. Visitors will be strengthened by the best coffee, the most delicious ice-cream, and some good bistros and pubs.
