The gypsy caravan is situated in the nook of a field with a view of the foothills of the romantic Black Mountains. The fields round about, which make up the peaceful sheep farm, are designated as an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Beautifully carved and painted, the Romany caravan has been lovingly restored by Romanies from Ireland, and it has allusions to its Irishness in various places. The inside of the Romany caravan - surprisingly roomy - is very cosy, with a pull-out double bed and a cupboard bed for a smallish child underneath. There is an electric heater, as well as a high-quality goose-down duvet and, for chilly nights, two hot water bottles.

Next to the Romany gypsy caravan is a little dark green cabin, with all the comforts inside - bathroom, complete with large shower, loo, wash hand basin and little roll-top bath; and a living-room with a neat little kitchen, a sofa, a table (with 2 folding chairs), a radio/CD-player, a radiator and an antique French shepherd's stove. The verandah is perfect for sitting out on warm summer mornings, and behind the cabin is an area of decking with a barbecue, table and chairs - perfect for watching the sun slip down behind the hills.

The cabin is extremely well insulated, so warms up quickly in winter, and is nicely cool in summer. The low impact cabin is designed with greenness in mind, so that it stands on old telegraph poles, not on a hideous concrete 'pad'. If it was lifted by a crane, there would be no trace of it left behind.

The luxury Romany caravan to rent for a holiday sleeps 2 (ideal for a honeymoon or special anniversary), as well as 2 children and a babe in arms. Weekly lets are available, as are weekends, long weekends and midweek breaks.

Bedding and towels, soap and loo paper are included in the price, as is electricity, hot water and fuel. The kitchen is extremely well-equipped for its size, and comprises hob, sink and microwave.

Dogs are welcome (but not in the caravan) if very well-behaved (as there are sheep and other animals on the farm) and up to date on worm/flea treatments.

Please note that there is a 200m private track which should be approached with care in low-slung cars. Guests should take advice in bad weather.

Things to do at this Romany Caravan in Welsh Border Country

Once batteries have been recharged, there are plenty of excellent walks around the Blaentrothy Meadows on public footpaths as well as further afield:  you can walk across the fields in under half an hour to the local pub, the Hunters Moon at Llangattock Lingoed. There are plenty of things to see and do in the area – castles, churches, country towns, markets, excellent restaurants (this area has been dubbed the Dordogne of Britain for good reason), outdoor pursuits (such as golf, riding, cycling, paragliding, climbing, pot-holing and huntin’/shootin’/fishin’), and wildlife reserves are plentiful.

The nitty gritty:

  • Cabin has bathroom with huge shower, little antique roll-top bath, loo and wash handbasin; living-area with neat kitchen with all cooking equipment, crockery and cutlery, microwave, 2-burner electric hob and fridge as well as a table and chairs; there is a sofa-bed, electric heater, coal-burning shepherd's stove, books, guide books, a CD-player/radio, tourist info
  • Caravan has pull-out double bed (not suitable for people over 6ft 1 in height, but sofa-bed in cabin can be used), electric heater and coal-burning Queenie stove
  • Barbecue

From the Visitors Book at Blaentrothy Romany Caravan and Cabin

"Fantastic, relaxed setting...can't believe we slept so late every day. An idyllic location and a real sense of freedom and escape." ~ A & M who stayed April 2008.

"The caravan is brilliant...we had to drag oursleves out in the morning we were so warm. We travel a good deal and tend never to go back to the same place twice, but we'd definitely make the exception to the rule for this place. We wouldn't change a thing..it's brilliant!" ~ Caroline & Jude, stayed April 2008

"A short but sweet holiday, and a fantastic place to call home for a few days. Huddled around the shepherd's stove, listening to the wind, cooking up some corned beef hash on the stove and looking at the AMAZING stars. The caravan is gorgeous!" ~ Rosie & Rob, stayed February 2008.

"Two days and nights in the snow! Snug and cosy we were, too, wrapped up in the warmest duvet in the caravan and with the incredibly efficient stove heating the cabin up. All in all, a lovely Valentine's weekend." ~ Sam and Paddy from Cirencester, stayed February 2007.

"I could live here! Wild weather - lunar eclipse - owls and rain on the caravan roof!! What a wonderful birthday surprise from a great boyfriend! We'll be back...." ~ Candi and Scott from Bristol, stayed March 2007.

"Thank you to the MacDonalds for taking the time and thought to make a perfect hideaway. Who needs to live in a large house, where you spend hours cleaning and gardening, when contentment comes in a small tin house and a tiny gypsy caravan. We need to change our lives!" Shula and Kevin from Kent, stayed August 2009.

"We have had a wonderful time in this special place - many thanks! Some times wild and windswept, but all cosy indoors in the cabin and wagon. We made it up the Sugarloaf, and had a lovely walk through fields accompanied by a little black cat who walked with us all the way!" Fritha and Tasha, August 2009.

"Wow, what a wonderful birthday surprise from my lovely husband! I have always loved Romany caravans, and to see one hiding in the distance, then to find I was staying in it, is a dream come true. It was like being a child again! The cabin gave us all we could need, and sleeping in the caravan was very cosy and magical with fairy lights." The Lawrences, September 2009.
