A visitor to the Wash House gives a sense of how impressed they were by their stay: "When we read the description of Merthyr Mawr and this cottage on the internet we thought it sounded a little too good to be true...However it has turned out to be modestly under-promoted! Words can't do it justice, a real feast for the senses! Many, many thanks!" The Wash House, as its name suggests, is one of the former laundry buildings to the listed 18th-century Georgian manor house on this beautiful coastal country estate in the Vale of Glamorgan. Luxuriously appointed, this lovely cottage is situated in a tranquil walled garden surrounded by 90 acres of idyllic gardens and parkland. Sleeps a couple (plus a babe-in-arms).

The cottage is on one floor and, apart from the bathroom and the bedroom, open-plan. The sitting-area has a sofa, an armchair, and an open fire which draws like a dream. The smart kitchen has everything you need for easy self-catering, and a generously-sized dining table is situated beneath the big window. The chic bathroom with loo, hand basin, bath (with shower over) makes one feel transported to a boutique hotel – as does the pretty bedroom.

Outside, there is a pretty sitting-out area on the terrace, as well as a private decked area in one corner of the walled garden. The garden is shared with the next-door cottage, The Laundry, but outside the walled garden, the Merthyr Mawr estate gardens and parkland are yours to use and explore, so there is always somewhere completely private to be. There are lawns, borders, terraces, woods, fields, an old chapel, a walled vegetable and fruit garden, and a river. Visitors are also welcome to use the solar-heated swimming-pool, the tennis courts, and to fish in the Ogmore River (with a licence).

Things to do around The Wash House

Apart from relaxing in the cottage and the grounds, there are so many things to do in the area. Wander down to the extraordinarily picturesque local village of Merthyr Mawr, about 10 minutes’ walk away, and enjoy the adorable thatched cottages originally built for the estate workers; or head a bit further on through the Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve until, after about 30 minutes’ walking, you emerge onto the stunning sandy Merthyr Mawr beach. Here, majestic dunes and big breaking waves are an awesome sight. The Ogmore riding stables are very close by, and you can take horses out to ride on the beach – a fantastic experience. Also within walking distance is Ogmore castle and estuary, where there’s a village with a view, a good pub, a vegetable grower, a supplier of local farm-produced meat, and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, which stretches for 14 miles from Aberthaw to Porthcawl.  Plunging cliffs, little secret coves and inspiring views make the Glamorgan Heritage Coast a must for walkers, cyclists or anyone with a love of unspoilt countryside. The coast is edged by the Glamorgan Heritage Coastal Path and fringed by delightful towns, small villages and miles of footpaths and country lanes.

Ogmore Castle Cowbridge

Slightly further afield, Cardiff is a 30-minute drive away for the opera, theatre, museums, rugby, restaurants and shopping. And under an hour away are the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, Aberglasney gardens, Llandeilo, Dinefwr Castle, the Gower Peninsula, and the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Local shopping and eating out is great, as the elegant market town of Cowbridge (‘Capital of the Vale of Glamorgan’) is only a short drive away. One of the very few walled towns in Wales, Cowbridge has handsome Georgian buildings, sophisticated boutiques and excellent places to have a meal.

From the visitors book at The Wash House

"Can we say what a wonderful time we had at The Wash House last week? It was quite the most beautiful place, and we will be returning. Many thanks." Mrs Ali Hunter

"We needed a place to stay, somewhere to get away.
To snuggle up by the flaming log fire,
Feeling relaxed was our desire.
It's quaint, comfy and warm,
Safe from a wet and windy storm.

This cosy perfect place,
Allowed us to nest from life's hectic pace,
So lovely and beautiful inside,
Everything is situated with pride.
Little touches of class,
Like fresh cut flowers in a vase.

We've found somewhere like never before,
On the Estate of Merthyr Mawr,
An exquisite cottage, as cute as a mouse,
A wonderful time we had, at No 2 the Wash House!"
